It’s a staggering situation in India to see over Rs.4 lakh crores being invested in developing land and transforming it into residential smart cities that have immaculate amenities. This was initiated by the NDA government that came into power in 2014. Over 100 cities in India were promised by the PMO citing the problem of poverty and poor development of land that led to many slums and illegal constructions. While 2015 was a positive year as many things in this plan progressed, it seems like 2016 is going to be an advanced state of the same which is a very good sign.
2015 saw many positives. The declaration of the list of the cities where smart cities will be developed opened opportunities for developers while amendments in realty development laws that favored the purchasers and investors created a positive environment around the entire land and realty development echelons in India. The division of various smart cities under various schemes also helped in the initial stages to progress. All in all, 2015 was the foundation period where the bricks were laid and now the initiation of the grand plan can be expected by the government, so, it can be said that 2016 will be a great year for this sector.
Urban Development and Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said, "The year 2015 is very significant in the sense that we have set urban planning in the country on a new course. Consequent to the provisions under AMRUT, Smart City Mission and Housing Mission, there is a new churning resulting in a new conscience on the part of urban local bodies, which are the Achilles tendon for effective planning and execution". He also added, "I am happy to see urban local bodies rediscover themselves, identifying gaps and coming out with strategies for correction. Smart City Mission has caught the imagination of harassed urban people. A new beginning has been made. Now the task is to collectively succeed on the execution front to make urban areas more livable and conducive to business and economic activity."
